This book is a hands-on guide to the new Common Worship Initiation services including Baptism, Confirmation and Thanksgiving for the Gift of a Child. It offers straightforward and realistic ideas about how to make the services work in your church. Drawing on her parish experience, Gilly Myers includes imaginative suggestions for a range of local situations, grounded in the thinking behind the new provisions. The new features of the services are set out clearly, identifying the differences from ASB and BCP and highlighting questions such as how to handle the range of options and the use of images.
Using Common Worship - Initiation Services balances practical tips with theological grounding in a way that will enable parishes to make the most of the opportunities of Common Worship as a whole.
Since their authorization from Easter 1998, Gilly has spent much of her time with clergy and lay people who are trying to interpret the new baptism services and use them to their best advantage in a variety of local situations. Besides being secretary to both Praxis and GROW (Group for Renewal of Worship), a liturgical activist, enthusiast and practitioner, Gilly shares her life with her husband and three children. She is Assistant Curate at Gedling, Nottingham and also co-editor of Common Worship Today, being published this Autumn.
Each of these stimulating, yet realistic, books has excited me again about the tremendous practical and pastoral potential of the Common Worship services and prayers.Mark Earey
The new Common Worship liturgy of baptism reflects these new insights, as must the rites, we have yet to devise mark the stages of the initiation process. Responding to the challenge of taking them seriously will change the perspective of both priests and people.Jeremy Haselock
