Doctors, like clergy, are in some ways symbolic of trustworthiness. So when the medical profession is thought to be untrustworthy, the consequences spread far into society.
This study looks at some significant cases in the light of a model for understanding trust. Out of this, it suggests key principles for rebuilding trust, and the distinctive contribution made by the church and theology in this task.
The Rev. Dr Robert Innes taught theology at Cranmer Hall and ministered in several County Durham parishes, before becoming Senior Chaplain and Chancellor of the pro-Cathedral of Holy Trinity, Brussels. He has written and edited a number of books and booklets in the areas of spirituality and ethics.
