Confession of sins is a biblical command and can be of immense pastoral significance. But confession in private, to a priest, with absolution was opposed by the Reformers as undermining the centrality of forgiveness by Jesus’ death and resurrection.
The new rites of reconciliation have once again raised these questions. This study looks carefully at the rites, at the issues involved and the dangers of reversing Reformation principles, and the pastoral significance of what the rites may offer
